Ann BABINARD
Blue Mountains Artist
Artist statement
My work represents changes in my ways of seeing and responding to the landscape in the Blue Mountains over time. The art I make could be described as landscape but it is as much about inner as outer terrain. Changing the media used, as well as the scale of works, enables me, and also the viewer to gain different perspectives of the unique place that I live in.
There are many different notions of landscape. It can represent something outside us, greater than ourselves. It can be a precious refuge, a return to nature and simplicity. But at times it may also feel overwhelming, threatening, even dangerous. At the present moment in history there is a growing understanding that the landscape around us is fragile, its existence threatened. Underlying all this is the awareness that the Australian landscape has a history with the indigenous inhabitants of this country long before the coming of white man.
